Denise N. Upshaw, MPA
Creative & Chief Executive Officer
"I am humbled to play a small part in amplifying the artistry of Black creatives: the same culture that's brought me joy, peace, and inspiration throughout my life."
Background: Denise N. Upshaw, MPA is a creator in every dimension of the word. Raised in Oakland, California, her father taught her the power of community activism and her mother taught her to channel her rambunctious energy into healthy activities. She began using visual art and spoken word to express herself; art became both her love language and her lifeline. Years later, after experiencing burnout at the height of her illustrious criminal justice career, Denise restored her health, peace, and joy by immersing herself in the Houston art scene, even painting her own pieces.

As the visionary behind ThriveLife Creative Innovation Hub, Denise leads a multidimensional ecosystem grounded in consulting and brand strategy, the Black Houston Creatives Network (BHCN), lifestyle and experience curation, innovative product development, and impact and advocacy. Through BHCN, she honors Houston’s Black identity, lineage, voice, brilliance, and cultural contribution with intention and care.
Although her work now spans media and creative ecosystems, she continues to hold a deep passion for positive youth development. This commitment inspired her to launch the ThriveLife NextGen internship program, which gives priority to students attending HBCUs.
It is without a doubt that Denise is walking in her purpose, living her creative flow, and embodying her favorite Maya Angelou quote: My mission in life is not merely to survive but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.
